BMR vs TDEE: What Do They Mean?

Updated August 2026

Learn what BMR and TDEE stand for, the difference between Basal Metabolic Rate and Total Daily Energy Expenditure and how calorie estimates are calculated.

What does BMR stand for?

BMR stands for Basal Metabolic Rate. It estimates how much energy your body would use in a day at complete rest to keep essential functions running, including breathing, circulation and maintaining body temperature.

It is not the number of calories you normally burn in a full day because real life includes standing, walking, working, eating and exercise.

What does TDEE stand for?

TDEE stands for Total Daily Energy Expenditure. It estimates your total energy use across an ordinary day, including your BMR plus movement, exercise and other activity.

In simple terms, BMR is your baseline energy requirement and TDEE is the larger estimate of what you burn during daily life.

How are BMR and TDEE estimated?

BMR formulas commonly use factors such as age, sex, height and weight. They are estimates based on population data rather than direct measurements of your metabolism.

TDEE is usually estimated by multiplying BMR by an activity factor. Choosing an activity level therefore has a significant effect on the final result.

Example of BMR vs TDEE

Imagine a person has an estimated BMR of 1,600 calories per day. If their activity level produces a multiplier of about 1.5, their estimated TDEE would be around 2,400 calories per day.

That does not mean they burn exactly 2,400 calories every day. Activity and energy use vary, so TDEE is best treated as a working estimate.

What are these numbers useful for?

BMR helps explain the energy your body needs before activity is considered. TDEE is often used as a starting estimate when thinking about maintaining, gaining or losing weight.

The Daily Calorie & BMR Calculator can estimate both figures together. For medical or nutrition advice tailored to you, speak to an appropriately qualified professional.
