How to Add a Watermark to a PDF
Updated August 2026
Learn what PDF watermarks are, how to choose watermark text, opacity, size and position, and how to keep the document readable.
What is a PDF watermark?
A watermark is text or an image placed over or behind document content. Common examples include DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, SAMPLE or a company name.
It can communicate status or ownership without replacing the original page content.

Choose useful watermark text
Keep the wording short enough to understand immediately. A long sentence repeated across every page can distract from the document itself.
If the purpose is document status, words such as DRAFT or COPY are often clearer than a decorative message.

Opacity and readability
A watermark should normally remain visible without making the underlying text difficult to read. Lower opacity makes the watermark more transparent, while higher opacity makes it more prominent.
Preview pages with both light and dark content because the same watermark can look different across the document.

Size, angle and position
Large diagonal watermarks are hard to miss, while a smaller corner watermark is less intrusive. The best choice depends on whether the watermark is primarily a warning, a label or branding.
Avoid covering signatures, figures or other information that needs to remain clear.
Watermark the PDF in your browser
The Add Watermark to PDF tool lets you adjust the watermark and preview the result before downloading.
Keep an untouched original. A watermark added to a copy is much easier to manage if you later need a clean version.
