How to Add a Watermark to an Image

Updated August 2026

Learn how to watermark an image, choose text, position, size and opacity, and keep a watermark visible without ruining the picture.

What is an image watermark?

A watermark is text or a logo placed over an image to show ownership, branding, status or another message. It can be subtle in a corner or deliberately prominent across the picture.

Watermarks are common on proofs, preview images, product photography and shared creative work.

Want to try the idea yourself? Use the Add Watermark to Image.

Choose the right position

A corner watermark is less intrusive but may be easier to crop away. A central or repeated watermark is harder to remove but covers more of the image.

Choose a position that matches your purpose rather than automatically placing every watermark in the same spot.

Opacity matters

Lower opacity makes the watermark more transparent and lets the image show through. Higher opacity improves visibility but can distract from the underlying picture.

Test the watermark over both light and dark parts of the image because contrast can change dramatically.

Text size and readability

The watermark should remain readable at the size the image will actually be viewed. Very thin or tiny text can disappear after an image is resized or compressed.

For branding, short text or a clear logo usually works better than a long sentence.

Add and preview the watermark

The Add Watermark to Image tool lets you adjust the watermark before exporting. Keep a clean original because the exported image will contain the watermark as part of the image.

A watermark can discourage casual reuse, but it is not a technical guarantee that an image cannot be copied or edited.
