A word count measures the number of words in a piece of text, while a character count measures individual letters, numbers, punctuation marks and - depending on the counter - spaces.

A sentence can therefore have five words but many more characters.

Do spaces count as characters?

Many character limits count spaces, while some tools show both characters with spaces and characters without spaces. Always check which rule the destination uses.
