How to play Minesweeper

  1. 1Choose Easy for practice or Standard for the timed leaderboard board.
  2. 2Reveal a square. Your first reveal and its surrounding squares are always mine-free.
  3. 3Use the number clues to work out where mines are, then flag suspected mines and clear every safe square.

Useful tips

  • •A number shows exactly how many mines touch that square horizontally, vertically or diagonally.
  • •On desktop, right-click a hidden square to flag it. On touch devices, use Flag mode.
  • •Only Standard wins are submitted to the Minesweeper leaderboard so every ranked time uses the same board size and mine count.

Frequently asked questions

Can the first click hit a mine?

No. Mines are placed only after your first reveal, with the clicked square and its surrounding neighbours excluded from mine placement.

What are the board sizes?

Easy uses a 9×9 board with 10 mines. Standard uses a 12×12 board with 24 mines and is the competitive leaderboard mode.

How does the leaderboard work?

Lower times are better. Only completed Standard boards can be submitted. Draft widgets keep testing scores away from the real live leaderboard.

Do flags have to be correct to win?

No. You win when every non-mine square has been revealed. Flags are optional helpers for marking suspected mines.

Is the game stored online?

The board itself runs in your browser. Personal-best and leaderboard behaviour follows Wid9et's shared game system, with Draft isolation while the widget is unpublished.
