How to play Connect Four vs CPU

  1. 1Choose a column to drop your red piece. Pieces fall to the lowest empty space.
  2. 2The CPU replies with a yellow piece. It looks for immediate wins, blocks immediate threats and otherwise favours safer central columns.
  3. 3Connect four red pieces horizontally, vertically or diagonally before the CPU does.

Useful tips

  • •Central columns participate in more possible four-in-a-row lines, so controlling the middle usually creates more options.
  • •Look one move ahead for both players. If the CPU can win on its next turn, block that column first.
  • •On desktop, focus the board and use Left/Right plus Enter, or press number keys 1-7. On touch devices, tap a numbered column.

Frequently asked questions

How is the score calculated?

Only wins receive a leaderboard score. Winning in four of your moves scores 1,000 points, and each additional red move reduces the score by 50 points. Fewer moves therefore rank higher.

Is the first player guaranteed to win?

No. This is a playable CPU challenge rather than a perfect-play solver. The CPU checks immediate wins and blocks, then makes a safe centre-weighted choice where possible.

What happens on a draw?

If all 42 spaces fill without either side connecting four, the game ends as a draw and no leaderboard score is submitted.

How does Personal Best work?

Your best winning score is tracked through Wid9et's shared game system. During Draft testing, testing scores stay isolated from the real global leaderboard.

Does the game send anything while I am playing?

The board and CPU moves run in your browser. Wid9et's shared game backend is used for supported Personal Best and leaderboard handling when a winning score is checked.
