What is a stack in Minecraft?

A stack is a group of identical items stored in one inventory slot. Many common Minecraft items stack up to 64, so players often describe large quantities in stacks rather than individual items.

For example, 128 blocks equals two full stacks of 64.

Stacks and leftovers

If the total is not an exact multiple of the stack size, divide by the stack size and keep the remainder. 150 items at 64 per stack gives two full stacks with 22 items left over.

This is useful when planning building materials or checking how much inventory space a project needs.

Not every item stacks to 64

Some Minecraft items use smaller maximum stack sizes, while certain items do not stack at all. The correct calculation therefore depends on the item you are carrying.

Do not assume 64 when planning storage for an item with a different limit.

Shulker boxes and larger quantities

Once a build needs many stacks, thinking in stacks makes storage planning much easier. You can work out how many inventory or container slots the materials will occupy before collecting everything.

Large build lists are also easier to read as “12 stacks + 18” than as one large item total.
