Why Nether coordinates are different

In Minecraft, horizontal distance in the Nether corresponds to a much larger horizontal distance in the Overworld. The commonly used relationship is 1 block in the Nether to 8 blocks in the Overworld for X and Z coordinates.

This makes Nether portals useful for travelling large Overworld distances more quickly.

Overworld to Nether

To estimate the matching Nether location, divide the Overworld X coordinate by 8 and divide the Overworld Z coordinate by 8.

For example, Overworld X 800 and Z -400 correspond roughly to Nether X 100 and Z -50.

Nether to Overworld

To go the other way, multiply the Nether X and Z coordinates by 8. Nether X 120 and Z 75 correspond roughly to Overworld X 960 and Z 600.

The Y coordinate is not converted with the same 8:1 rule.

Why portals do not always link exactly as expected

Portal linking also depends on nearby existing portals and valid portal locations. Terrain or obstruction can mean a portal is created or linked near the ideal coordinates rather than exactly at them.

The coordinate conversion gives you the target horizontal area, not a guarantee of exact portal behaviour.
